Preston Wheelers '25', 27th May - Feelin' hot, hot, hot...

After many weeks of below-average temperatures, the thermometers swept suddenly the other way but, more significantly for cyclists, a very powerful and persistent breeze harried us over the weekend.

The L2525 course starts at a supermarket carpark in the centre of Garstang, which provides a nice little warm-up zone. Then, assisted by a strong tailwind, sweeping quickly out of town I think most riders almost went airborne over the canal bridge. A left turn to join the A6 southbound, to be buffeted by a cross/head wind for 7 miles, making an about-turn using a lay-by for much of the same. Then, westward through St Michaels to Great Eccleston and a return back to Garstang into the speed-blunting headwind.

First home for Southport CC, 11th overall, was in-form Pete Leonard, who was delighted to tuck inside the hour with 59:53 securing a prize for first Vet60 in the process. Rob Hurst in 1:0:18 finished 12th, and Richard Cary 31st with 1:5:04. We were pipped for the team prize in the North Lancs TTA contest by Preston Wheelers, whose total time was a little inside 3 hours.

Overall event winner was Nigel Haigh of Sportscover RT with an impressive 54:39 on a tough day.
